Description

Join Calligraphy Lancashire for a series of talks and demonstrations looking into the beautiful world of calligraphy. You can even have a go at recreating these ornate styles as each talk is followed by an optional 'hands-on' workshop.

At the workshop, you will learn the skills to recreate the striking calligraphy that you have seen during the talk; it's a great chance to enhance and develop your own beautiful writing style.

Please note that we will be looking at a different style at each session.

Dates

  • 6pm - 8pm, Wednesday 26 June (National Writing Day)

    Style: Illumination and Gilding (both traditional and modern).
    We'll take a look at the history of illumination (text decorated with gold and silver) and the techniques used to create these ornate works often richly decorated with dazzling colours and detailed drawings.

    The introductory workshop session will give you the chance to try out the basics of Illumination under expert tuition.

  • 11am - 1pm, Friday 26 July

    Style: Modern Calligraphy
    Modern Calligraphy is unlike traditional scripts, which require specific tools and precise measurement of heights, spaces and angles. We'll explore the basics of Modern Calligraphy, including the tools and technique used to create stylish letters.

    The introductory workshop session will give you the chance to try out the basics of Modern Calligraphy - it's also great for those wanting to use calligraphy on their wedding stationery.

  • 11am - 1pm, Friday 16 August

    Style: Lettering and mark-making

    Let's take a closer look at the art of lettering which can have more in common with drawing or painting letters than with traditional handwriting. Each letter requires patience, precision and creativity. We'll explore different variations of letters and scripts as well as advanced techniques such as brush lettering. Get ready to see a huge variety of lettering and mark-making styles.

    At the introductory workshop session, you will give be able to try some modernised and abstract lettering techniques using pencil, crayon, watercolour pencils etc.

  • Talk/demonstration plus 'hands-on' session £4 (+ 71p booking fee)
    This includes all tuition and materials.
    These sessions are suitable for all abilities and beginners are warmly welcomed.


Times
Please note that the talk/demonstration will last approximately 50 minutes. After a short break, the 'hands on' learning session will begin, this lasts 1 hour.
