Event description

Description

Keeping chickens is actually a very simple process. Chicken keeping is a return to what traditional households would have done, to ensure they had a good source of protein and variety of food straight from their backyards or gardens..... in reality, keeping chickens takes very little time and there is nothing better somehow, than taking your basket in the evening or morning to pick up completely fresh eggs; they are so much fresher than those from a supermarket and you can be totally sure that they are organic and good for you.....

We hope to inspire guests to keep their own chickens and will explore the range of practical things one needs to learn to begin.... Where to find coops? What do they eat and drink? A wider discussion about how to keep them safe from foxes; a simple exercise in looking at the costs of set up versus the return in foraging for wonderfully fresh eggs and perhaps, just the quality of life it can offer, both the chickens themselves, but you as a family..... Where to find your chickens and the pros and cons of different types.....how many chickens should you keep? What to do if you want to breed, how to hold a chicken, how to clip their wings and keeping them clean and pest free......what to do for them in different weather conditions....

We will also use the workshop to explore some egg-related recipes..... how good are you at making french toast, home-made custard, and omelettes that melt in your mouth? Have a delicious lunch and hopefully feel inspired and equipped to go away and take the plunge....
