Fri 31 March 2017, 10:00 – 13:00 BST
As coaches, we need to spend time and energy investing in ourselves and our own growth – especially if we expect our clients to do that too. Through Coach Top-ups, Lori Shook offers short personal development programmes as a gift to the coaching community. Lori aims to introduce a variety of ways to approach personal development and to bring fresh ideas to each topup. So prepare yourself for another great personal journey with Lori
Innocence. Bullying. Consciousness.
Exploring how your brain trumps you up
Why do we behave the way we do?
Why do we make some of those choices we wish we didn’t?
Our brain is making decisions all the time – way beyond what we’re aware of. We only have the capacity to be conscious of a small percentage of the data the brain processes. This means that we are so very unaware of what decisions this mighty instrument is making for us regularly. Although sometimes this is very useful:
You DO want to automatically slam on your breaks when a person jumps in front of your car, and
You DO want to move away from a situation that looks dangerous.
But you might not notice that you regularly avoid that person who reminds you of your wicked Uncle Vanya while that person thinks you snub them or are arrogant.
Why do we react ridiculously sometimes?
Why do we have certain emotional habits?
Why do we react to certain people in ways we wish we didn’t?
Why are some things motivating and others not?
Where does fear come from?
Is it possible to change our ‘automatic’ responses?
For example, you might become aware that you are continually railing against injustice in the world. If you knew that was your emotional brain (limbic system) just trying to help you survive, perhaps you could be less stressed. As soon as we understand that life is not fair, and that our outrage about injustice is just the limbic system having its say, we might be able to let go a bit and find more peace within ourselves. And we might be able to make better decisions. And so it is with the brain’s other pet peeves like belonging, status and certainty.
In this topup we will explore some of the fundamental choices our brain makes on our behalf and how it drives our behaviour. We’ll look at the brain, its chemicals and drivers to understand more about ourselves, our tendencies and habits – especially unconscious one. And we will look at ways we can re-tune our brains so we can make different choices.
This will take place on Friday, March 31st from 10am to 1pm at Heythrop College, 23 Kensington Square, London W8 5HN.
The cost is £25 per person, to pay for the space.
