Losing your native language: the ‘dark’ side of bilingualism

The Bilingualism series, coordinated by Julio Villa-Garcia (University of Oviedo), is a forum on bilingualism and multilingualism targeting a broad audience. Of great interest to parents, students, language learners, and the general public, the series brings together a host of world-renowned scholars in the fields of bilingualism and multilingualism. Drawing on their expertise, speakers will discuss various aspects surrounding bilingualism, such as the benefits of speaking more than one language, the potential challenges bilinguals face in schools, and how to raise a child best to be bilingual, among many others.

Second lecture: Losing your native language: the 'dark' side of bilingualism, by Professor Laura Domínguez (University of Southampton).

In this talk, Professor Laura Domínguez will present the latest research on native language attrition, the process by which native speakers get to ‘forget’ aspects of their native language. Attrition seems to take place after long-time migration when speakers are exposed to, and need to use a second language in their everyday lives. Although it is well-known that attrition affects certain aspects of the first language first (people often report forgetting words or changing their accent), less is known about whether attrition can affect grammatical representations (e.g. the marking of gender on nouns or aspect on verbs) and how this process works. She will describe this phenomenon with examples and will introduce the current linguistic accounts. The goal is to show that attrition is a natural outcome of bilingualism, which can be accounted for by current theoretical models of language acquisition.

La Serie sobre Bilingüismo, coordinada por Julio Villa-García (Universidad de Oviedo), es un foro sobre bilingüismo y multilingüismo dirigido a un público amplio. De gran interés para padres, estudiantes, aprendices de idiomas y el público en general, la serie reúne a un grupo de académicos de renombre en el campo del bilingüismo y el multilingüismo. Basándose en su experiencia, los ponentes abordarán diversos aspectos relacionados con el bilingüismo, como los beneficios de hablar más de un idioma, los posibles desafíos que enfrentan los bilingües en las escuelas y cómo criar a un niño para que sea bilingüe, entre otros.

Segunda conferencia: La pérdida de la primera lengua: la parte «oscura» del bilingüismo , por Laura Domínguez (catedrática de la Universidad de Southampton).

En esta ponencia, la catedrática Laura Domínguez va a presentar los últimos descubrimientos sobre la pérdida de la lengua materna (la atrición lingüística), el proceso por el que los hablantes nativos pueden llegar a «olvidar» aspectos de su lengua materna. La atrición lingüística suele aparecer como resultado de la migración a largo plazo cuando los hablantes son expuestos y usan una segunda lengua en su vida diaria. Aunque es bien conocido que la atrición lingüística afecta a ciertos aspectos de la lengua primero (los hablantes a menudo se olvidan de palabras o cambian su acento), todavía no se sabe bien si este fenómeno puede afectar a las representaciones gramaticales (por ejemplo los marcadores de género en sustantivos o marcadores de aspecto en verbos) y cómo se desarrolla este proceso. En esta ponencia, Laura describirá este fenómeno con ejemplos e introducirá las teorías lingüísticas existentes. El objetivo es demostrar que la atrición lingüística es un resultado natural del bilingüismo que puede ser explicado por los modelos de adquisición de lenguas que existen hoy en día.
