Lost Words £95 +VAT and booking fee

Many natural history words common in our language are being lost, and this ‘literacy’ day will look at how we can reinvorgorate a love of nature through words and even make up our own through the medium of sketching, creative writing and oral wordsmithing.

This day will explore our emotional and nature literacy using simple techniques applicable to any class. Through sensory activity and observation we will be looking at narrative of story, prose, poetry and song, combined with simple sketch and painting techniques in the outdoors to make a deeper connection with the natural world. The day will use Jackie Morris's and Robert Macfarlene’s book 'Lost Words' along with other ‘nature-poets’ such as Ted Hughes and Mary Oliver to literally journal our way into nature.

A course for primary teachers, across all phases, especially those responsible for literacy and art and any educators working in the natural world. It will equip educators with ways of working outside through the seasons to build students journalling abilities.

“This was such an expansive day full of usable techniques yet quite profound in realising exactly what nature is like and how to depict through sketching and writing – can’t wait to start with my class” Participant from October 2018 course

Based at Skelton Grange Environment Centre in Leeds, where thousands of children enjoy outdoor learning and play each year in woodland, meadow & pond settings. Led by Jon Cree, an inspirational tutor with over 30 years’ experience as an environmental and earth educator and trainer. Jon has a genuine passion for helping others ‘get in touch’ with the natural world through dynamic learning programmes and hands-on learning experiences.

We will sustain you with tea & coffee, and some very gorgeous cake from That Old Chestnut, a friendly Leeds-based bakery that uses organic ingredients 100% free from animal products. Please bring a packed lunch with you - local options are limited.

Skelton Grange is a beautiful, light eco-building set in a nature reserve with ponds, meadows, woodland, vegetable garden & fruit orchard. If the weather is inviting, you are very welcome to enjoy your lunch or cup of tea outdoors and wander...

All proceeds will go to support the great charitable work of The Conservation Volunteers at Skelton Grange Environment Centre, which you can read more about on our website. You can also view other workshops & events we are planning!
