LOTL May Meeting: Understanding dementia with the Alzheimer's Society
Tue 2 May 2017, 19:00 – 21:00 BST
May Meeting: Become a Dementia Friend
Dementia Awareness Week falls in May, so we're planning on learning more about the issue with a visit from the Alzheimer's Society.
You'll have the opportunity to contribute to their current campaign by joining 'Dementia Friends', the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition.
There are 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK right now, and this number is set to more than double to two million by 2051, so it is incredibly important that we have a good understanding of how our community can support anyone affected by it.
There is no cure for Alzheimer's disease or any other type of dementia, but delaying the onset of dementia by five years would halve the number of deaths from the condition, saving 30,000 lives a year. Sadly dementia research is desperately underfunded, so we'll be raising money in aid of the Alzheimer's Society on the night with a raffle, but we will need your help with donations! These could be anything, from unwanted Christmas gifts, to chocolates, or even gift vouchers for any local businesses you might have a connection with.
Note: This is a WI event for anyone that identifies as female and is over the age of 18.
LOTL members can attend for free and guests are welcome with an entry fee of £5.
