Loud-hailing for Leaders:

Why Compelling Communication

Needs to Start at the Top

Led by: Mairi Damer, Founder, WORD UP Communications

 (Lunch provided)

In this half day session, communications specialist and former BBC Radio Scotland producer, Mairi Damer argues that effective, credible and confident communication of key messages and superb stories simply has to start at the top of an organisation if they're to filter all the way through the staff structure, and out into the wider world.

Never assume because you have a comms expert on your team your comms are covered!

Digital platforms offer unparalleled scope for spreading the good word, but people are what matter most when it comes to memorability. Mairi advocates that Chief Officers & senior managers must stop being remote, and take a more proactive, strategic and personal approach to profile and brand building, whether in print, in person, on air or online.

Those all-important organisational messages and stories really can and must be communicated by boss people. And why not? Who better to combine brand and leadership messages with real personality and individual style than the people in charge?

It's not all rosy in the brand garden, of course. Getting the right blend between personal and corporate comms is a tricky business, with perils and hazards aplenty, so assessment of risk and reputational damage can’t be ignored, but when it comes to confident and credible comms, CO must lead from the front.

Contemporary communication and brand-building needs brave leaders to get with the programme, face their fears head-on, and jump right into these digital days.

About the facilitator:

Mairi is founder and proud owner of WORD UP Communications, a successful business providing creative communications support to clients when they’re stuck for words, or are struggling to find ways to tell their own stories.

Mairi’s CV is compiled from 15 years as a BBC radio producer, and a further 8 at the coalface of community recreation. She learned loads about the importance of confident communication and storytelling in both environments, but Mairi’s a trained photographer and ex punk rocker too, a combo which plays a big part in her alternative approach to the world of words.

Her client list includes Women’s Enterprise Scotland, Shelter Scotland, SCVO, Early Years Scotland, the Federation of Small Businesses, The Scottish College for Educational Leadership, the Centre for Excellence for Looked After Children in Scotland, and numerous small businesses.
