Event description

We are delighted to announce that this event will be filmed by London Live. More information about this will be sent shortly to all registered participants. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the organisers.

Model Westminster and the LSDA (London Sixth Form Debating Association) are proud to present our 3rd Annual night of debate training and competition at City Hall!

The purpose of this event is to provide young people with an opportunity to learn debating skills from a professional debate trainer, Tony Koutsoumbos, Director of the Great Debaters Club. There will then be an opportunity to practise these skills in a debating competition and recieve feedback from proffesional judges.

This event is all about creating a fun and free way for young people to discuss important issues with each other. By joining this event you will gain more confidence in voicing your opinions and analysing arguments, which can help you reach your own judgements about real decisions being made in the UK.

You will have the opportunity to meet people from surrounding schools who have similar interests to you. There will be breaks for networking and making new friends.

NB: As this is an apolitical debate, no party politics will be allowed and may lead to disqualification or deduction of points.

Who will be taking part ?

There will be 32 participants from a number of different schools. There will be 8 teams of 4 people in total.

The schools taking part will be: St. Dominic's (SD), Cardinal Vaughan (CV), St Marylebone's (SM), The London Oratory School (LO) and pupils from other schools and colleges in London.

If you are not part of the 4 named schools above, you can enter as a team/pair or as an individual and you will be put in a team with others on the day.

How the evening will work?

The evening will start with a presentation on the basics of debating and how to prepare for a debate. This will then be followed by a competition, with an award for the team that wins.

How will the competition work?

  • Every team will have the chance to debate twice.

  • They will be scored each time and the team with the highest score across both debates will be the winners.

The Debate:

  • 6 minutes to prepare arguments for each motion during the event. Motions will be given in the form 'This house believes...' or 'This house would...'

  • Each debate to last approximately 8 minutes (allowing 1 minute per person).

  • Our format is loosely modelled on the British Parliamentary format. eg. One team will be in favour of the motion and the other will oppose. Each debater speaks only once and the sides take alternating turns giving speeches.

What shall I do before the competition?

  • Register on eventbrite

  • Practice debating a range of motions

  • Practice remaining apolitical - speak about issues without mentioning specific parties or politicians

  • Practice being concise and keeping to time

Do I need to have debated before?

We will have a professionally run introductory session before hand, so you do not need any public speaking or debating experience. Everyone is welcome regardless of their level and experience.

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

All participants must be aged 16-19 .

What should I wear?

All schools should wear uniform if you have one. If not, smart casual wear should be worn. Anyone with offensive logos or clothing that is not suitable for the event may be refused entry.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

There are plenty of public transport links. Use google maps to plan your journey in advance as registration will commence at 4:30pm.

What can/can't I bring to the event?

We recommend that you allow around 10 minutes before the start time to allow enough time to pass through airport style security. Your host will meet you at the security point.

This includes going through a metal detector and having all bags scanned : any metal items, mobile phones etc should be removed from pockets and carried in bags.

Can I bring a guest?

Unfortunately, due to space restrictions this will not be possible. As each school will enter two teams, the audience will comprise of the teams that are not currently debating. If you would like to invite your teachers/ coaches please contact us so we can add them to the list.

Where can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Speak to the organisers via the eventbrite page.

For enquiries about the venue etc. the organisers can forward your enquiries to our hosts at City Hall.
