Event description

Description

To celebrate Valentine’s Day – we will be venturing into an area of London where you can find love, lust, torment and murder!

Well, we're going to explore Fitzrovia – which has been described as the centre of Bohemian London where over the centuries it has been the home to prostitutes, writers and artists. Each of them has their own stories to tell but on this walk we shall be concentrating on the romantic tales – wandering the streets to discover the secrets of lust and forbidden love.

But the foundation to this area can be found in the dalliances of a Merry Monarch who had many lady friends – but one in particular can be looked upon as being responsible for much of the reputation of Fitzrovia.

If you believe you’ve had a traumatic love life, wait until you hear of the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas' love life. We shall hear about how he met a lady in a Fitzrovia pub and fell in lust with his future wife within 10 minutes.

Fitzrovia was an area that welcomed love in all its guises. Love that was banned from other areas of London found a home here. Prostitutes could work openly and gay men and women could possibly find their love requited here. And we shall hear of some of the most famous stories of such forbidden love - as those concerning Oscar Wilde and Bosie and the life and loves of Quentin Crisp, played brilliantly in a TV film by John Hurt.

On this walk we can find almost every cliché of love. For example, we shall hear the story of the Prince and the prostitute – it didn't have a happy ending and just may have lead to the most famous murderer in history! No more clues.

On a lighter side, we will hear of the mysterious love life of the "Tunnelling Duke". And finally, we will end on a crime of passion which resulted in the last woman in Britain to be hanged in England.
