DR Congo is a beautiful country set in the heart of Africa, yet it has seen some of the worst violence since World War II. Two thirds the size of Western Europe it is a vast country with much mineral wealth. However, the effect of a continual power struggle between leaders has been catastrophic, with more than four million killed since 1998.
Around 1,200 people die each day as a direct or indirect result of the conflict - more than half of them children. Many have suffered horrific abuse, including rape and sexual slavery by armed groups, which has contributed to the advance of HIV/Aids.
Violence is particularly strong in the North-East of the country close to the border with Rwanda where the rebel groups operate. Our project ‘Love Congo’ is based in the city of Butembo, 100kms north of the provincial capital Goma.
PSM is our main partner in Congo; they are an NGO based in Butembo, working with women who have been raped during the war and ex child soldiers rescued from rebel groups. Women are given training in agriculture, sewing and making clothes while the boys are given an education and offered support in woodwork, metalwork and mechanics. So far over 7,000 people have been helped through PSM’s programme of rehabilitation.
DR Congo is a largely Christian nation and many of the schools and hospitals are run by churches. We are training and equipping church leaders to be at the centre of the community and enabling them to better understand how they can transform the wider community. We currently support a local nursery, providing each child with one hot meal a day. We are also launching a support scheme of a local school to ensure all the children are able to receive an education, to pay teachers a regular wage and to help them build new brick classrooms.
We have made links with a local organisation called Promicrofinance who specialise in small loans to local people to help them get businesses started. They have a fantastic track record and with more capital would be able to support more businesses to get off the ground.
