Love Is Not a Crime launch night
Thu 13 April 2017, 18:00 – 20:00 BST
Join the Lesbian Immigration Support Group (LISG) for the launch of their exhibition Love Is Not a Crime and celebrate their 10th anniversary.
LISG are a group of women in Greater Manchester who are lesbian and bisexual asylum seekers and refugees and their supporters.
The group was set up in 2007 as an anti-deportation campaign for a lesbian from Sierra Leone. In February 2008 the campaign was successful and she was given leave to remain in Britain. Due to the high profile of this campaign more lesbian asylum seekers contacted the group during this time looking for support. They therefore decided to continue as a general support group for lesbian and bisexual asylum seekers and refugees.
The group now consists of several volunteers supporting over 15 refugees and asylum seekers from countries such as Afghanistan, Jamaica, Liberia, The Gambia, Saudi Arabia, Uganda, Cameroon, South Africa and Pakistan.
Many of the women contacting LISG did not feel able to be open generally about their sexuality. The group gives these women a place to be themselves with other lesbian and bisexual asylum seekers, refugees and supporters.
Love Is Not a Crime runs from Fri 14 April – Sun 25 June 2017.
Part of our Never Going Underground season, a year long programme of exhibitions, events and learning programmes exploring the past, present and future of LGBT+ activism.
