Lowkey: In Conversation
Event Information
Description
Lowkey is a British-Iraqi rapper with an international reputation. Since releasing a series of mixtapes before he was 18, through to live performances on BBC Radio, Glastonbury and T in the Park, and scoring a top 10 album (by digital downloads) in the form of the stunning Soundtrack to the Struggle, Lowkey has achieved critical acclaim and a global fanbase while remaining independent and combining his art with political activism. As a solo-artist and collaborator with established rappers such as M1 (from Dead Prez), Immortal Technique, and English supergroup Mongrel, Lowkey has produced ‘conscious’ hiphop which has tackled such subjects at neo-imperialism, the war on terror, Palestine solidarity and the 2011 English Riots. He is a prominent member of the Stop the War Coalition and endorsed Jeremy Corbyn’s vision for the Labour Party at the 2017 General Election. He also witnessed the tragedy of the Grenfell fire in June of last year and has spoken out about the ways in which it symbolised the corruption of contemporary British politics.
He will be joining us talk about his life, music and politics.
