Event description

Description

Join us for a screening of Gillo Pontecorvo's 1966 classic The Battle of Algiers.

The Battle of Algiers tells the story of the life-and-death struggle between the French colonial government of Algeria and the Algerian Liberation Front, the FLN. Shot in newsreel-style black and white and starring many real members of the FLN, the film is striking in its documentary style; so much so that a disclaimer was added on its original US release that it contained 'not one foot' of documentary material. One of the most powerful political films of all time, The Battle of Algiers is passionate – yet impartial – record of Algeria's fight for independence.

The evening will be hosted by Gareth Evans, film curator at the Whitechapel Gallery.
