Our good friend and trusted guide, Roger Bone will be taking us on a tour of Clerkenwell, a part
of London with a turbulent history, including its religious and political radicalism - the Marx
Memorial Library is on the route.
Stories will include the rise of watch and clock making, the first beer brewed with hops in
England, St John’s Gateway, Victorian alfresco loos, and the infamous Clerkenwell House of
Correction.
Some of the pubs on our visit will include The Jerusalem, a recreated 18th century tavern in an
old watchmakers shop, The Crown Tavern on Clerkenwell Green, with its famous conspirators’
clock from 1683, and The Betsy Trotwood, a pub based on David Copperfield’s aunt who
Dickens had living in a cottage nearby.
Supper (optional) will be at one of the pubs at the end of the walk, coming back full circle to
Farringdon Station. If you are staying for dinner, please let us know at events.iti.lrg@gmail.com.
