An online conference on childhood neglect including awareness, how to respond, themes and types of neglect, and safeguarding challenges.
Learning Objectives
- Highlight and increase awareness of the national and London profile of childhood neglect
- Increase knowledge in how to respond to neglect in practice, including having courageous conversations
- Focus on themes and types of neglect, including anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice and the differences amongst different demographics
- Explore the challenges in safeguarding children from neglect, including learning from child deaths or significant safeguarding incidents related to neglect

Session 1: Overview of different types of neglect in the context of the local and national picture
- Led by Jane Wiffin
- Engage with national research, knowledge, and messages from local child safeguarding practice reviews about child neglect
- Explore best practice in identification and response to ensure child-focused, poverty-informed, and culturally sensitive approaches
Session 2: Neglect through the eyes of the child
- Led by Dr hc Jenny Molloy
- Share what a child’s life looks and feels like in a chaotic home where professionals focus on the adults
- Understand what neglect means to the child
- Understand how trauma is created and manifested
- Learn how to manage trauma responses in children
Session 3: Why does child neglect tend to be neglected? Having courageous conversations
- Led by Professor David Shemmings OBE PhD
- Understand how neglect is defined, including 'affluent neglect'
- Examine current research on causes and consequences
- Learn what research tells us about how best to help children and families
