About this event

"It is impossible to be unmoved by the exuberance and creativity of Lucy Joy and her quartet. This vibrant young singer-composer absolutely captivates as she creates an exciting and entirely original performance and artistic point-of-view” says jazz vocalist and composer Jo Lawry. The Lucy Joy Quartet is the latest of a long line of innovative modern jazz groups to emerge out of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama’s jazz department. Led by vocalist and composer Lucy Joy, the group perform her original songs which fuse rolling, swaggering modal jazz and sensual, rich female vocal songwriting. Influenced by Blossom Dearie, McCoy Tyner, Wayne Shorter and Betty Carter, but also by Radiohead, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Led Zeppelin, the Lucy Joy Quartet is eclectic and diverse in its approach, but always energetic, dynamic and exciting. They are Lucy Joy, Thomas Sladden, Louis Gascoyne and Luke Brueck Seeley. Come and see them and they will draw you into their world.

Born and raised in the North West, Lucy Joy is a vocalist, improviser, composer and songwriter. Based in London, she is currently an undergraduate student in jazz composition and arranging at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and is a fellow student, close collaborator and bandmate of breakout jazz pianist Thomas Sladden, with whom she performs regularly as a duo. She has had the pleasure of also working with acclaimed members of the modern jazz scene, including Scott Stroman, Darmon Meader, Trish Clowes, Clare Wheeler, members of the legendary New York Voices (Peter Eldridge and Lauren Kinhan) and members of jazz supergroup MOSS (Kate McGarry, Theo Bleckmann, and Jo Lawry), as well as jazz/soul singer/songwriter Ola Onabule and vocal powerhouse Corinne Bailey Rae.
