Come and make a beautiful Welsh Milking Stool.
This FREE Beginner's Woodworking Course is for anyone aged 18-25 looking to get hands-on with traditional hand tools and learn green woodworking skills.
Throughout the course, you'll learn how to safely and effectively use essential tools such as saws, hand planes, while developing key skills in measuring, marking, cutting, shaping, and creating mortise and tenon.
No prior experience is needed—just enthusiasm and commitment to learn.
During the 6 week course, students will put their skills into practice by making a traditional Welsh milking stool, an ideal first project that covers all the fundamentals of traditional woodworking. Whether you're looking to take up woodworking as a hobby or lay the foundation for more advanced work, this course offers a solid and rewarding starting point.

Wk1- Introduce our stool project, familiarisation with tools and sharpening as well as safe usage. We will also conduct a dynamic risk assessment of the workplace should also have time to start laying out the basic design of our stools.
Wk2- Setting out the stool tops using various marking gauges such as sliding bevel and square, Using hand plane and cabinet scraper as well as block clean to conduct shaping and finishing work
Wk3- Introduced the group to cleaving Greenwood and how to rough out the basic leg shape using a small carving axe. Students will also be introduced to the shave horse and draw knife to shape the legs before use of the spokeshave.
Wk4- Introduced the group to Mortise and tenon, use of sliding bevel and drill to create sound mortises as well as cutting wedges in preparation for gluing up
Wk5- Work on general assembly of stools and levelling as well as a loving time for students to catch up or finish any incomplete areas of work.
Wk6- Look at alternative ways to finish our stools incorporating carbon scrapers block planes, as well as different oil options and potentially milk paint
