Luke Kemp - Societal Collapse and Goliath's Curse

We'll be hosting Dr. Luke Kemp, a researcher from Cambridge's own Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER), to discuss societal collapse and his work in the area, including his new book "Goliath's Curse: The History and Future of Societal Collapse."

We tend to view societal collapse as the ultimate catastrophe. But what if that's only the view from the top 1%? Dr. Kemp's research analyzes thousands of years of history to make a startling claim: for most people, the fall of massive, elite-run "Goliaths" has often led to a better life.

In a world facing risks from AI, climate change, and nuclear weapons, what can we learn from past collapses to ensure a better future?

Come along for a fascinating discussion. There will be a social afterwards!
