Event description
LUMIX Stories for Change: 'The Traces Left Behind' by Catherine Hyland - private talk/screening and Q&A from British Journal of Photography.

About this Event

To celebrate the release of the first LUMIX Stories for Change commission, British Journal of Photography are hosting a private talk and screening with award winning photographer Catherine Hyland.

Two years in the making, Hyland’s work 'The Traces Left Behind' documents a community of North Korean defectors in New Malden, the largest community of defectors outside of Korea. Hyland will discuss her relationship with this remarkable community and the ways they uphold traditions to maintain a connection with their identity and heritage.

Hyland will also explore the representation of such communities in the media - from the perspective of both photographer and subject - and the critical importance of artist responsibility. By taking control of the way a story is portrayed, she will highlight how photography can dictate the narrative that surrounds it and challenge preconceptions about the subject matter.

The free event will take place at the Import Building near East India on the 6th of February. Doors open at 6:30pm, the talk and screening begins at 7:00pm followed by a Q&A and drinks reception till 9.30pm. The commission was shot on LUMIX S Series and Panasonic staff will also be in attendance to talk to photographers.
