Review:

Luna exists in a world of liminalities. Her suburban home is as much in the city as it is in the countryside. She lives with her mother but has to work the fields for cash. She hangs out with a load of no-marks, despite being empathetic where they are not. These dichotomies split a divide through the narrative, with Luna caught between her old life and the chance of a new one. The new life she finds depends on her old one dissipating entirely.

Along with being director Elsa Diringer's first feature, LUNA also marks the first appearance of Laetitia Clément who acts in the titular role. It is in her performance that LUNA finds its spirit and its core - she embodies a certain ambiguity, two states pulling against each other. Tropes of girlish innocence or damsels in distress are far from the frame here. Luna is capable and self-determined, but unsure of how to square a life that is increasingly contradictory. With a naturalistic style and free-roving camerawork - shot by experienced cinematographer Elin Kirschfink (THE GOOD LIFE, BY ACCIDENT) - LUNA captures the tumult and joy of a youth on the edge. / Review by Milo Garner
