Event description

Description

Wolfeton House is a fine medieval and Elizabethan manor house, lying in water meadows. It reeks history and the romantic atmosphere of rivalry between the great Dorset families of the 16th century, to two of which (Mohuns and Trenchards) the present owner Captain Thimbleby, is connected. We will enjoy a 2-course lunch with wine and coffee, and then tour the house.

Wolfeton contains many beautiful and unusual features including the Great Staircase, splendid plasterwork and panelling. In 1506 the Archduke Philip of Austria and his Spanish wife Joanna visited, on their way to claim the Throne of Castile. Sir Walter Raleigh of Sherborne Castle was a frequent visitor.

We can also see the outside at least of The Riding House, the oldest to remain in this country, and may be able to go inside if restoration works permit (for a small additional charge payable on the day).
