In celebration of Black History Month and this years theme, “Standing Firm in Power and Pride”, you are invited to:
Lunch and Learn: Crowning Glory - supporting black children to look after their hair and skin on 06 October 2025 12:00-13:00 in the Melsetter Suite, Town Hall.
It will be facilitated by, Principal Social Worker (Shaista Afzal) and Assistant Director for Corporate Parenting (Abigail Adieze).
Barnardo’s recently released a report called ‘Crowning Glory’. This is an incredible piece of research which evidences how hair and skin are deeply connected to self-identity, self-esteem, and cultural pride. It explores how we can normalise and celebrate Black hair and skin and move away from Eurocentric standards.
We will explore the findings in more detail, and think together about how we can improve our practice in this area.
Target Audience: Children’s Practitioners
