From Paris is Burning to #dragrace: Social media and the celebrification of drag culture

About this event

Lunch and Learn ‘From Paris is Burning to #dragrace: Social media and the celebrification of drag culture’

Dr Zeena Feldman and Dr Jamie Hakim present their research on the evolution of drag culture, from its subversive political roots to its contemporary state of branded entrepreneurship. By charting social media’s role in this change, they examine how drag went from the margins into the mainstream. Through analysis of Paris is Burning (1990) and RuPaul's Drag Race, this talk explores the politics and ethics of drag’s celebrification and its support for homonormative narratives of the ‘good queer’.
