Lunch and learn: Understanding how Health Literacy Impacts Cancer outcomes
Overview
Across the Humber and North Yorkshire region, a significant proportion, over half of the population in some areas, have low literacy and numeracy levels. In Hull, an estimated 70% of the adult population do not have adequate literacy and numeracy skills to routinely understand health information.
This means that they are likely to be unable to understand more complicated information, e.g. health promotion information on diet, or simple clinical information EVEN if delivered with help and support. They are also unlikely to be able to understand simple spoken instructions and the importance of following them.
Rachel Rushmer is a Health Librarian at North Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust and is passionate about helping healthcare professionals to understand the impact of low health and literacy levels on patient behaviour and choice. In a one hour webinar she gives a practical introduction to Health Literacy. The session explores the core principles of health literacy and introduces simple, effective techniques to help you level the playing field and get your message across clearly. No prior knowledge is required – just your interest in improving our patient’s experience
This Lunch & Learn webinar is for healthcare colleagues who are working in primary and secondary care, VCSE and community organisations who provide health information and guidance to people around cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
