Lunch and Learn : LGBT+: Definitions, minorities, and minorities within minorities

About this event

An interactive session which aims to raise awareness of issues relating to gender identity, sexual orientation and the health inequalities faced by LGBT+ people, including practical advice on how to use language which is accurate about, respectful to and inclusive of LGBT+ patients and staff.

Participants will:

• Improve their understanding of sexual orientation and gender identity

• Gain a basic understanding of the law as it relates to LGBT+ people and the NHS

• Understand some of the inequalities LGBT+ people have faced in the past, and continue to face.

• Learn how some of the language we often use at work can exclude LGBT+ people, and how we can change that.

Host Bio

Emily Wraw has a background in HR, with a special interests in employment law, employee engagement and mental health. She is the head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at The Rotherham NHS Foundation trust. Emily is disabled and bisexual.

Serin Thomasin has a background in EDI, sexual health promotion and youth work, both work within and outside of the NHS. They joined The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust as an EDI advisor earlier this year. Being non-binary and autistic themself, Serin has a particular interest in trans inclusion and accessibility.

In the past financial year, participant DNAs and Late Cancellations at our events and programmes resulted in a loss of over £20,000 of NHS funding. If you are unable to attend, please let us know as soon as possible or nominate a colleague to attend on your behalf. This will ensure that we make best use of public monies and are able to continue to provide development services in future.
