About this event

  • 45 minutes

This event will take place at Kelham Island Museum.

Join our dedicated volunteers and enthusiasts Mick and Jane to learn all about the beautiful historic site, Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet. You’ll hear about where Benjamin Huntsman’s crucible steel was made, and how the large tilt hammers and grindstones were powered by waterwheels for the grinding of scythes.

Much of the heritage of the site has been preserved, including the huge waterwheels, small forges, a dam, a finishing shop, and domestic buildings, all of which are a window into how people lived and worked in the past. Steeped in history, the Hamlet is home to makers today, with tenants including independent blacksmiths still working on site.

Join us at Kelham Island and hear about the Hamlet's fascinating heritage and learn more about what happens there today.
