Lydford Reserve Work Party
This site is owned by Butterfly Conservation and further details can be found on the Devon Branch website: https://butterfly-conservation.org/our-work/reserves/lydford-old-railway-devon
This historic site was, until recently, home to the rare and protected Heath Fritillary. Although the species is no longer present, the reserve remains a valuable habitat for others, including the Silver-washed Fritillary, Green-veined White, Speckled Wood, Marbled Fritillary, and Pearl-bordered Fritillary.
This will be the first of two work parties scheduled at the reserve, the second is planned for February 2026. The site is divided into four sections, and this session will focus on tackling encroaching bracken and bramble along either side of the railway path in Transects One and Two. While much of the vegetation will have already been cleared by a third party, our role will be to address any remaining growth and finish the task by raking and piling the cut material along the path edges.
While tools will be provided, you’re welcome to bring your own, especially in the event of a larger-than-expected turnout.
