Seminar/talk overview:

Lyndon, Dr Nic, and Cesca will share an insight into Lyndon's epic challenge of becoming the first quadruple amputee to successfully complete an Ironman in under 24 hours. As a previous paralympic athlete, Lyndon worked with Coach Dr Nic, Cesca (MSc Sports Nutrition student) and an incredible team from LJMU for the 10 months leading into the challenge day. Hear about his gruelling training, the event itself, the determination, how he overcame the darkest points, and the scientific input from his team at LJMU that supported him to success.

Bios:

Lyndon Longhorne: At just 8½ months old, meningitis took both of Lyndon's legs, right arm, and the fingertips on his left hand. But it never took his determination. Over the past 12 years, he has pushed his body to the limit in the pool as a Paralympian, a World and Paralympic Games finalist, and a 13-time British record holder. On 31st August Lyndon took on his toughest challenge yet and completed an Ironman in under 24 hours and become the first quad amputee in history to do so.

Dr Nic Robinson: Dr Nic is an endurance coach, physiologist and a Senior Lecturer and researcher in Sport Coaching at Liverpool John Moores University. Nic is the programme leader for BSc Sport Coaching. Nic is also chairs the International Pentathlon Para Commission (World Pentathlon). Dr Nic led took the role of Challenge Director delivering the coaching and forming a sport science team for Lyndon's worlds first challenge, and she will share the art and science behind her role.

Cesca Anderson: Cesca has recently completed her MSc in Sport Nutrition here at LJMU. During both her undergraduate degree at the University of Exeter and her Masters, she has provided evidence-based, personalised support and practical guidance to high-performance athletes. Cesca is also a Senior Customer Experience Coaching Associate at Runna, where she helps deliver physiological and nutritional education as well as personalised coaching experiences. As part of her MSc research project on the nutritional requirements of amputee endurance athletes, Cesca worked closely with Lyndon to provide tailored nutritional support throughout his journey.
