About this Event

"Gossip and the Unspeakable"

This workshop tries to work through two perhaps competing positions in order to think about how we situate ourselves as researchers and writers. The first position is gossip: that is to say, talking too much about the wrong things and in the wrong way. What place is there for gossip in literary criticism? How much of literary criticism is gossip? What kind of special work might gossip allow us to do? The second position is the unspeakable: i.e., that which can’t be said, which remains unspoken, lost, impossible to articulate. Does research sometimes demand its own poetics? How do we do academic writing without foreclosing disturbance.
