Event description

Description

Once again Leeds Civic Trust is running its popular series of early evening walks, each themed around a particular period in Leeds' history and architecture. Before we set off on the walk people are invited to gather informally over a finger buffet consisting of sandwiches, hot & cold savoury snacks, cakes & fruit and wine, beer and soft drinks. Ideal for a fun, sociable and informative spring evening in the company of friends old and new, or with your work colleagues after a hard day's toil!

New for 2019: new Tour Guide system with individual receivers for each walker: hear comfortably at your chosen volume and overcome background noise and distance from guide. Use your own headphones if you prefer - any 3.5mm jack will fit.

IMPORTANT: THIS WALK STARTS FROM EAST STREET ARTS PREMISES IN ST MARY'S LANE. It will be confined to the Mabgate area, so please plan your journey by car or public transport accordingly.

MABGATE THEN & NOW

Mabgate is a fascinating but often overlooked part of Leeds. Just over the footbridge from a rapidly changing Quarry Hill (or SOYO as Caddick PLC would like us to call it), a stone's throw from the glitz of the Victoria Quarter and adjoining the 60s tower blocks of Lincoln Green, Mabgate has its own distinctive identity: today, it is the home of Rick Manners School of Boxing but also East Street Arts (anyone for pugilism and painting?), but it has a long and interesting history. Connecting the present with the past, the walk will take in the site of St Mary’s Church and the cholera graveyard, it will track the route of Mabgate Beck and its role in Leeds’ industrial expansion in the 19th century – a flour mill, an iron foundry, the growth of ready-made clothing, but will also reflect on Mabgate’s current uses and functions, and the future for this unusual and historic part of Leeds.

  • East Street Arts premises will open their doors to 'walkers' from 5.45pm
