Organiser

Conserving Scottish Machair LIFE+ project

Machair LIFE+ is a 4 year project which began in January 2010 to secure and improve the conservation status of 70% of the world's machair habitat and its associated species. The project has implemented and demonstrated sustainable land management methods that both optimise the conservation interest whilst being compatible with local crofting practices. The project is supported by the European Union LIFE+ scheme, The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (CnES) and the Scottish Crofting Federation (SCF) and is focussing on the machair within the designated Natura 2000 sites in the Uists but also encompasses several other west coast Scottish islands.
