Event description

Description

AI and the use of machine learning algorithms have increasingly become embedded into everyday technology, influencing everything from Netflix's suggestion of films you might like, to how much your car insurance will cost. However, the increased use of algorithms raises important ethical questions about how society understands and scrutinises decisions made in this way.

Aimed at a broad scientific audience, this event is an opportunity to acquire a rapid overview of machine learning and the ethical questions that surround it, in preparation for the series of seminars planned during the semester. There will also be a guided practical session (bring your laptop) to see algorithms in action!

Programme

2.15pm An introduction to machine learning - Professor Mike Tipping
3.00pm Refreshments served in the 3 West North Foyer
3.20pm Machine learning in practice
4.00pm Ethical questions and overview of the thematic semester - Professor James Davenport.
4.15pm Close

Speakers

Mike Tipping is Professor of Data Science within the Institute for Mathematical Innovation (IMI) at the University of Bath, working primarily in the areas of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. Between spells in academia, and before joining the University of Bath in early 2016, Mike spent several years in industry: eight years at Microsoft Research (Cambridge), six years running an independent statistical consultancy and, most recently, two years as Director of Science at Cambridge analytics start-up Featurespace.

Professor James Davenport is the Hebron & Medlock Professor of Information Technology at the University of Bath. He is a BCS Vice-President (Academy Trustee) and runs the Bath Hub of Computing at School. James is Chair of the International Mathematical Union's Committee on Electronic Information and Communication and has held visiting positions in 15 overseas institutions.

This event is free to attend, but please register by Wednesday 7th February 2018. For further information please email r.willis@bath.ac.uk or visit the IMI webpage.

This event is part of the IMI Thematic Semester Machine Learning: Algorithms and Ethics and is arranged by both IMI and the Department of Computer Science at the University of Bath.
