Event description
‘Mad’ men do what sane men dream. From Concrete Thinking to Symbolic Functioning in Psychotic or Borderline States of Mind

About this Event

Under the pressure of anxiety we all tend to move immediately into black-and-white states of mind. There is a good reason for this which is explained in a particular kind of psychoanalytic description of development, which Melanie Klein termed the paranoid schizoid position. One of the most important features of this state of mind is that it does not provide any place for thinking and symbolic function. This at first has to be provided by the analyst. A significant development can occur when these patients bring dreams, often nightmares, which are the interface between acting out concrete behaviours and thinking in.

David Morgan will look at how those who have failed to develop this capacity for thought, act on the world, or themselves and the analyst. He will also explore how this relates to fundamentalist thinking at an individual and societal level.

He will illustrate his talk with case examples from his work in the NHS and privately.

For the second half of the day he will encourage people to bring clinical examples from their work and use these to illustrate different ways of engaging with this material through various forms of interpretation .
