Made on the Mardyke/Made by the river by Rainham Marshes

Join us on Saturday 6th September 11am-4.30pm - as part of Hydracity 2 for Totally Thames 2025

As part of Totally Thames 2025 InspiralLondon's Hydracity 2 Festival - at a workshop location near the Thames Estuary & Mardyke confluence - (secret location to be confirmed) join artist Charlie Fox for river creature making workshop and then weather permitting - with the creatures we will explore the foreshore of Rainham Marshes for an improvised photo shoot. This part of the Thames is extremely photogenic and evocative as the river is allowed to 'flood' its banks and nourish the marshlands that lie between Rainham and the mouth of the river Mardyke.

Then join us in the afternoon to enjoy the Mardyke and search for the emerging creatures… looking into the past, experiencing the present and imagining into future: in the next 100, 1000, 10,000, million years – imagining what hybrid creatures will appear in the post-natural environment of the Mardyke?

With workshop participants and the creative input from the river as it transforms the materials that make up its environment, we encounter some creatures from the near future emerging from the River Thames. And as we picnic together, by the river, we will discuss the Mardyke and the larger Thames rivers - as natural resources, grappling with all the human waste and pollution thrown their way; to think about how the river digests this waste, transforms it and is transformed, in a hybrid cycle of regenerations.

    • 11am-1.3opm Workshop Making.
    • Picnic/lunch break
    • 2pm- 4.30pm pm we arrive at Field of Peace

Part of Totally Thames 2025:

Organized by

InspiralLondon CIC is a non-profit project - a collective of walking artists, project associates (urban planning, geography, ecology, architecture) and urban explorers - working together to create then nourish a 300 mile spiralling walking trail through the whole of London. Conceived as an artist-led walking project to create an urban/semi-urban walking trail through Metropole of London, under the umbrella of MT (Metropolitan Trails 2013). The route follows both existing footpaths and passageways, while creating new ways in which to explore and find a way through the city. The trail is an invitation for all to explore, rediscover and reconnect with their city; to begin to rethink the urban, the metropolitan and its relation to other and to inhabiting place.
