Magical Connections is a project that brought together music and accessible digital technology to enable residents at Morrell House, a care home for people over 65 living with dementia, to explore their creativity.
Magical Connections, supported by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation as an effort to make York dementia friendly, has been a collaboration between Musical Connections, a participatory music project aimed at improving the well-being of older people and people with dementia, and Macchiato Productions, a film production company with a strong interest in community and participatory films.
We used iPads to encourage residents to capture parts of their music session experience, and to talk to each other about their favourite music and interests, talk show style. The music sessions have also been professionally filmed, to record on video the liveliness, joy, enthusiasm, and friendships generated through communal creative participation. The resulting film will be stored in the iPads for residents to look back at their experience and achievements any time they like.
The iPads have also been equipped with a variety of apps the residents can enjoy in their own time, from virtual pottery making, to music composing apps, virtual painting, gardening, drumming, and animation making, to mindfulness and Skype, as an increasing number of research provides evidence of how digital technology can support the daily life of people living with dementia in a variety of ways.
On the 28th of March we will celebrate the conclusion of Magical Connection by screening the final film and performing music to an open audience. The iPads will also be on display for people to try out the apps, before they are officially donated to Morrell House. A small delegation of residents will join us for the afternoon and perform their favourite songs.
The event will take place at Clements Hall from 1.00 to 2.30. Refreshements will be provided. Please join us by booking one of the free places via Eventbrite, or by calling Simona at 07931700025. Tickets are limited and distributed on a first come - first served basis.
