Delivering net zero during an energy crisis

About this event

Our last net zero Exchange was less than a year ago, in November 2021, but the context for companies thinking about climate and energy has changed almost beyond recognition. After a decade of stable energy prices, consumers face extraordinary rises caused both by the war in Ukraine and then the collapse of Bulb and smaller energy retailers.

And worse is yet to come. Inflation, staff shortages and a risk of recession in the UK and elsewhere. China’s wave of Covid lockdowns will further disrupt supply chains.

And some, particularly in the US, are now questioning the consensus within business around social purpose, ESG, and the importance of meeting Net Zero targets.

Plus, it’s a long way from COP26.

In this exchange we will be looking at the path to Net Zero through two lenses:

Chapter 1: Shifting from pledges to purpose

At the moment, almost every company we work with is talking about purpose.

The pandemic, the great resignation and the climate crisis have put Social Purpose and Sustainability onto company agendas like never before. Organisations are doubling down on long-term value creation when customers, staff and shareholders need it the most.

The challenge is finding concrete, realistic, action to back up all those fine words.

But how can we bring purposeful actions to life in our organisations? How do we instil a culture that strives for real impact beyond simple KPIs?

Chapter 2: Eyes on the prize

Reading the headlines, it would be easy to shift into crisis mode — following Elon Musk with his "super bad feeling" about the economy and 10% workforce cuts.

But we’ve been here before. The challenge for the next few years will be maintaining our Net Zero ambitions while living within the current economic situation. As customers face a cost of living crisis, how do we understand their needs and provide greater value to them?

How do we respond to the current economic situation, without disregarding preparation for the future? How do we drive collaboration - both internally and externally - to deliver on our climate ambitions?

Start your day with some stimulating discussion. Expect a variety of cross-industry perspectives and experiences. Grab yourself a cup of coffee and share your point of view, practical advice on where to start, what's working, and where the opportunities are.
