Event description

Description

Join us for a rare opportunity to hear Mahler's magnificent and ground-breaking first symphony in a wonderful local Church setting.

Please be aware that the huge orchestral resources required for this enormous work means that space for audience members will be more limited than normal. You are advised to buy tickets early.

Programme:

  • Neilsen – Overture from Maskarade
  • Tchaikovsky – Francesca da Rimini
  • Mahler – Symphony No 1

The key work in our concert will be the Mahler Symphony. Here's a link to a terrific guide to this superb work. The guide starts with this summary:

"The Austrian composer's first symphony meshed the imagination and narrative of the symphonic poem with the architectural cohesion of earlier models. His crazily ambitious project changed the genre for ever."

To open the evening, we've chosen two less well known orchestral pieces from Neilsen and Tchaikovsky that we're sure you'll enjoy.
