Main Street Part 2 - The Original, Gritty Side of Downtown Memphis
About this event
This is a continuation of my Main Street part 1 tour to show the difference between North Main and South Main. The south side of Main Street was originally a residential neighborhood, but the railroads changed that in the early 1900s. Catering to the passengers, it wasn't long before hotels, restaurants and various businesses lined the street crowding out the families that lived there. But by the end of the 1960s, Main Street was virtually a ghost town and the place where only criminals thrived. The assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the ensuing violence was the final straw that led to it being deserted. The good news? It was virtually ignored for decades, and developers had no interest in purchasing any properties so most of the buildings are in their original form. Let's explore this area together, look at some unique architecture and hear the stories of the past while learning how life has returned once again. There is some Elvis history, of course, and we will also see the boardinghouse from where James Earl Ray shot Dr. King. Some places are said to be haunted, but you can be the judge of that. I'll also tell you about the building where music legends used to hang out and supposedly inspired a Rolling Stones song.
