Description

What Will Be Covered?

This is the foundation course for the suite of chainsaw related awards, and provides an introduction into the underpinning knowledge of chainsaw maintenance and crosscutting. This popular course is ideally suited to private individuals, woodland workers, ecologists, estate workers, groundspersons, foresters and arborists - indeed, anyone with a need to use a chainsaw to cut down 'small' trees.

Your instructor will explain risk assessments and the relevant health and safety legislation, before moving on to cover safety features of the chainsaw, chain types and maintenance tasks such as chain sharpening, recoil starter, air filter, spark plug, chain brake and guide bar maintenance as well as drive sprockets and clutch systems. You will be completing tension, compression and horizontal and vertical bore cuts, and discussing how to deal with a trapped saw.

Felling cuts will be demonstrated, and you will practice, basic felling cuts, 'dogstooth' cuts for trees weighted in the direction of fell, 'split-level' cuts for trees weighted against the direction of fell, and the 'safe corner' cut.

Dealing with hung-up trees by severing the hinge and rolling or poling will also be completed, as will safe branch removal, crosscutting to a site specification and stacking.
