Maintenance Strategies in the Age of Industry 4.0: A Sustainability Perspective

Aiming at enabling ever-higher levels of production efficiencies, Industry 4.0 has introduced smart sensing nodes, emergent intelligence and data processing methods. On the other hand, organizations need to consider Industry 4.0 technologies contribution to sustainability. Cost-effective equipment operation and maintenance is a key to ensure sustainable development. Clearly, any deterioration in machinery conditions reduces their efficiency, increases energy consumption and carbon print. Vibration, using PZT accelerometers and traditional analysis methods, has been widely used for assessing machinery conditions. However, PZT accelerometers are bulky and expensive, especially, when more points of measurement are required. Likewise, traditional data analysis methods are not powerful in extracting weak condition related features, especially when signal to noise ratio is low.

Therefore, there is a timely need for smarter solutions to identify and rectify those failures - preferably at early stages of their onset. Recent advances in Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technologies, adaptive and machine learning algorithms provide such solutions. Compared to conventional monitoring and control strategies, MEMS based sensors offer better accuracy, accessibility and flexibility in addition to their small size, low energy consumption and cost.

Funded by EU, Innovate-UK and industry, the speaker and his research team at Manchester Met University, have developed new to market systems that saved industry huge reductions in the cost of down time and energy consumptions.

The lecture presents an overview of emerging Industry 4.0 applications with a focus on need for new generation of maintenance strategies, design of the new monitoring systems, laboratory tests related to those technologies, performance of the developed adaptive and machine learning algorithms.

Bio

Alhussein Albarbar is a Professor of Sustainable Systems Engineering with the Department of Engineering at Manchester Metropolitan University (UK). His research interests include MEMS based sensor technologies, reliability and maintenance strategies, analysis of thermal, vibration and acoustic signals. To date, Alhussein has published over 100 papers, 3 books (in particular: “Thermal Analysis of Power Electronic Devices Used in Renewable Energy Systems”), 5 book chapters in addition to numerous key note speeches and specialised industrial workshops.
