About this event

Communication is one of the most important skills we need in daily life. Most everyday tasks require communication such as learning at school, asking for food and drink, sorting out problems, making friends and having fun.

For those who experience communication difficulties, Makaton can really help to take away frustrations and can open all kinds of possibilities.

Makaton is a unique communication programme that uses signs (gestures) symbols (pictures) and speech to enable people to communicate. Makaton supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression.

Makaton Level 1 training is your starting point to learning a valuable communication skill. It is recommended for anyone including:

  • Public service workers* who need to use Makaton at home or in their work.
  • Public service workers* who need a more detailed knowledge about using and implementing Makaton to develop the communication skills of others.

On this Level 1 training you will learn over 125 signs and symbols from the Core Vocabulary. This is a 6-hour workshop being delivered over 2 afternoon sessions.

Each participant will receive a Level 1 manual (paper or digital version) containing all the signs and symbols learnt and a Certificate of Attendance upon completion.

Makaton Level 1 training is being delivered to you online via Zoom on:

Wednesday 28th January 2026 2pm-5pm

Thursday 29th January 2026 2pm -5pm

***Learners will need to attend both sessions***

Organized by

The UNISON Cymru Learning team are responsible for working with members, activists and branches to organise the delivery of the union's Wales Union Learning Fund (WULF) project and our member learning activities in Wales.

We organise on courses, workshops and conferences aimed at building the skills and confidence of the public service workforce, working in partnership with our Branches, employers and specialist learning providers.

WULF courses are open to all public service workers living and/or working in Wales, and we welcome workers who are yet to join UNISON and members of other unions.

All our courses take you on a journey - exploring issues that impact you in your workplace, discussing ideas for how you and your colleagues might improve things, and provide opportunities for you to get involved in making change happen through your union and beyond.

We also recruit Union Learning Reps and provide public service workers across Wales with advice, guidance and signposting relating to their learning and development needs.
