About this event
About this event
This training is for professionals and the voluntary sector supporting residents of Durham, Sunderland and Newcastle.
Are you meeting people in your local community – either through your work or volunteering? Domestic abuse is an enormous problem in our society, and everybody has a part to play in tackling it.
If you have a role that means you are building relationships with people and/or entering their homes, you might have experienced that ‘gut feeling’ that tells you something isn’t quite right in their relationship, or witnessed something that shouldn’t be happening. This training can help you understand how to respond safely and effectively to these situations and make a referral to Make a Change.
Who is it for?
This training is for professionals working in the statutory and voluntary sector, healthcare workers and people people who are involved in community groups.
There are no requirements for the training session, and certificates will be available upon completion.
What is Make a Change?
The Make a Change programme gets to the root of the problem by working with the person who is using abusive behaviour (known in the sector as perpetrators). It’s a free, local programme for anyone over 18 in Durham, Sunderland and Newcastle, who is concerned that they might be hurting, scaring or controlling their partner. Over the course of the programme, participants are supported by a specialist to understand how harmful behaviours can be abusive and learn to develop healthy relationships. Partners and ex-partners of the participants are also offered separate, confidential support.
Make a Change is a multi-tiered and early response to people using abusive behaviour which was developed by Respect in partnership with Women's Aid Federation England and draws on the Change That lasts model.
Make a Change is delivered in Durham by Harbour, in Sunderland by Right Turn. In Newcastle, Make a Change is delivered in partnership between Harbour and Changing Lives.
