About this Event

Make up for lost talk: how to help students discuss the news

Explore practical ideas to get students back on track with their speaking and listening, with a particular focus on how to discuss current affairs.

What you will learn: Classroom-ready activities to help students make sense of what’s happening in the world. Join us for proven ways to:

  • Discuss sensitive issues safely
  • Help each student develop their communication skills
  • Boost progress in news-literacy skills such as reasoning, scepticism and open-mindedness

You’ll also find out how to embed these ideas across your curriculum though the Burnet News Club, a weekly programme for primary and secondary state schools in the UK.

Why? Lockdown learning can be hit and miss. Many students have lost out on vital opportunities to develop their oracy and will have a lot of questions about current events. We want to share proven ways to develop their communication skills and give them the space to discuss what’s making the headlines.

Who? This webinar is perfect for:

  • Teachers of KS2-3 looking for tried-and-tested ideas that can be used again and again.
  • Teachers and school leaders who wish to develop their curriculum

How? This is an online meeting session via Zoom. When you have registered, you will be sent the link at least one hour before the meeting begins.
