MAKE YOUR VOTE MATTER WITH PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION
Sat 20 May 2017, 14:00 – 17:00 BST
An interactive event about the path to real democracy hosted by Unlock Democracy Manchester and Make Votes Matter
Politics in the UK is broken - come along to find out how to fix it and have your voice heard!
In May 2015, our First Past The Post electoral system resulted in the most disproportionate general election in British history. The Conservatives won 37% of the votes but ended up with 51% of the seats in Parliament and 100% of the power. UKIP, the Green Party and the Liberal Democrats won a quarter of the votes cast but ended up with just 1.5% of seats between them. In fact, 74% of votes were ‘wasted’ and did not contribute in any way to the final result. This is not real democracy! Join us to discuss how we can build a better democracy with a Proportional Representation voting system and find out how you can make your vote matter.
In Greater Manchester we have 27 Members of Parliament, four of whom are Conservative and twenty three are Labour. The majority of them are undecided about their position on proportional representation, others are against and a few are supportive. We want to convince them, the UK Parliament and most of all citizens in general that our electoral system has to change along these lines.
Our panel of speakers will outline their thoughts on how and why our electoral system needs to change and the role of proportional representation. There will be plenty of opportunity for audience participation in questions and comments.
