Maker Monday 7th Birthday Edition ONLINE w/Luciana Haill + Ella Flavell

Birmingham's highly established Maker Monday is seven years old this month. Come celebrate online on Monday 25th July with the amazing Luciana Haill and Ella Flavell.

Internationally renowned digital artist Luciana Haill’s work intersects new technology, neuroscience, and the unconscious to make mental processes visible (in particular – lucid dreams, meditation and nostalgia). She creates artworks which combine digital media, augmented reality, performance, drawing and binaural soundscapes. Her brainwave artworks have been described as a form of ephemeral portraiture through monitoring the brain’s EEG signal. Luciana experienced viral meningitis as a teenager which led to a fascination with the brain.

Volk’s Daddy Long Legs Brought Back through Augmented Reality

Luciana will talk about her augmented reality artwork, Volk's Daddy Long Legs. The artwork brings the long-lost seafaring train known as ‘the daddy long legs’ back to life through the magic of augmented reality, and can be viewed via a smartphone app called “Pioneer AR” available from Google Play or the Apple App Store.

Famous Brighton-based Victorian inventor Magnus Volk designed the electric train, ‘the Daddy Long Legs’ (real name the Pioneer), and it ran through the coastal waters along Brighton seafront, from Banjo Groyne (opposite Paston Place) to Rottingdean from 1896 and 1901.

Artist Luciana Haill said: “It will be like seeing a ghost of this lost engineering masterpiece. I was so impressed by Volk’s hubris to make a train that travels in the sea and runs on electricity, it makes me reflect on contemporary technologies and wonder where we will be in 100 years”

App users can walk along the seafront and watch the geo-tagged artwork travel alongside them.

Ella Flavell

Ella Flavell is a printmaker and Art History PhD researcher based in Dudley. Since 2017 she has been making linocuts of landscapes, architecture, and film scenes under the name Burin & Plate, which references the historical printmaking tools and techniques which first drew her to the medium.

Burin & Plate prints are driven by a focus on pattern and graphic contrast, and make use of household materials and cost-effective tools in order to make printmaking accessible.

A key source of inspiration for these prints has been a background in Art History, from medieval woodblocks to the Expressionist and Modernist printmakers of the early twentieth century. Ella’s current research concerns the interrelationships of Art Brut and the avant-garde in mid-century French collections

Overview: Ella's talk will take a look at some of the most prominent influences behind Burin & Plate prints, and the main tools and techniques employed in their making. A key focus will be how to create effective prints with cost-effective materials, and how to find time for creativity in otherwise busy schedules.
