Event description

Description

Are you the mother of a child under 12? Would you like to take some time out to explore your creative side through discussion and a guided hands-on making session? Join us for a free creative event at the Depot Cinema on 21st April 2018. Presented by artist Alinah Azadeh, the session will act as an introduction to handmade work through craftivism (crafting in the service of social, political or environmental change).

Inspired by the pioneering, creative campaigns of the Suffragettes, as well as making connections to current campaigns by women globally, each person will create small-scale pieces of craftivism to take away and share a lunch provided by the The Depot for the project (free).

We have a small fund available to put towards childcare or travel requirements. We are not able to provide childcare on site however if a childminder or the costs of travel by public transport to the venue is needed, for example, we could support the cost of this. (We would need to be told in writing how much is needed and how it will be spent, however this would remain anonymous for the purposes of reporting).

Makers of Change has been made possible through the Women's Vote Centenary Grant Scheme and is produced by A Woman’s Place Project CIC, a contemporary arts organisation which takes equality as its starting point, exploring it creatively through exhibitions, projects and events.

Alinah Azadeh is a Lewes-based artist, writer and performer, using textile, interaction and storytelling to open up fresh ways of reflecting on our social and cultural identities. Over the last two decades, her public artworks have invited thousands of people to take part in installations and live works on subjects ranging from grief, loss and debt to gender equality and migration. Commissions include The Gifts (2010, Bristol Museum), Westminster Hall (Magna Carta Anniversaries Banners, 2015), Hull City of Culture (Revolutionary Makers, WOW Festival, 2017) and Burning the Books (2011-15). She is Associate Research Fellow at the Birkbeck Centre for Contemporary Theatre and the RSA.

Please make us aware in advance of any dietary requirements.

Please let us know if there are any access issues that we may need to be aware of. We are unable to provide interpreters for this event but are happy to support any applications that you may need. The Depot is an accessible venue.
