Event description

Description

Whether you're a full-time writer looking to give freelancing a go, a freelancer who wants to hone their skills, or someone who would like to change careers and earn their living through writing, this talk is for you.

During this evening panel discussion, Dolly Alderton and Stuart Heritage will discuss the realities of being a freelance writer, from the good to the bad, leaving you with enough information to decide whether it's the right path for you. They'll discuss how to break into the industry, how to craft a great pitch, establishing relationships with editors and much more.

Topics covered will include:

  • Sourcing stories
  • Pitching to editors
  • Dealing with finances
  • Which publication is right for which piece
  • Tailoring your writing to different audiences
  • Editing your own writing
  • Coping with rejection

Dolly Alderton is a journalist and writer. She writes features on love, dating, sex, friendship, women's issues, social trends, food and travel for a range of magazines and papers such as Grazia, Glamour, Marie Claire, Red, GQ, The Telegraph and The Sunday Times Style. She co-hosts the news and pop-culture podcast The High Low. Her first book Everything I Know About Love, will be published by Fig Tree/Penguin next Spring. The Dollymail launched in January 2016 and has just under 8000 subscribers.

Stuart Heritage writes about film, TV and music for the Guardian, alongside other high-profile publications. His biography Don't be a Dick Pete was published in May 2017.
