Description

IOP Scotland Public Lecture

Making a (physics) living out of goo

Professor Wilson Poon, University of Edinburgh

Professor Wilson Poon trained in physics & theoretical physics at Cambridge University, where he stayed to study for a PhD in mineral physics at the Cavendish Laboratory. After a year at Portsmouth Polytechnic, he joined the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh, where he now holds the Chair of Natural Philosophy. This is one of the oldest and most prestigious chairs in the University. It was established in 1708 and over the past 300 years has been held by such eminent scientists as Adam Ferguson, John Playfair FRS, Peter Guthrie Tait, the Nobel Laureate Charles Barkla FRS and, most recently, Michael Cates FRS.

In this lecture, Professor Poon will explore his career and his research studying well characterized colloidal suspensions to study questions of generic relevance across the whole of condensed matter and statistical physics – or as he puts in the title, making a living from goo.

Wilson is an engaging and entertaining lecturer, as those attending his inaugural lecture discovered when the event began by University of Edinburgh Vice-Principal, Professor Lesley Yellowlees, walking across a bath of corn flour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSD_vdXTApU. Although the corn flour bath isn’t available for this lecture, it’s nevertheless sure to be interesting, educational, and entertaining.
