Making a Portable Project Lab (Session 8)
How might we... create a portable Silk Mill project lab?
We’re taking the Silk Mill Re-Imagine project lab out of the museum and into the community. Come and help us shape how the portable Silk Mill project lab is designed, built and used?
Here at Derby Museums we are preparing for the development stage of the Derby Silk Mill – Museum of Making £16.4m project. During 2016 new ideas will be tried and tested in the Silk Mill 'Project Lab' to create the types of experiences visitors can expect in the completed Derby Silk Mill – Museum of Making in 2020 and will engage local communities in helping pilot those ideas –ensuring the museum is ‘made with the makers of today’.
Join us in this final workshop of three to find out more about the exisiting Silk Mill project lab and help us co-design and prototype a portable version (including a maker bar) to engage more people in the development of the Museum of Making.
You don't need to have any previous experience of designing or making, just a creative mind and a lot of enthusiasm!
Derby Silk Mill - Museum of Making
The five year project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Derby City Council and Arts Council England, aims to open the Derby Silk Mill – Museum of Making in 2020, bringing thousands of visitors to the city each year. The museum will display fascinating items from Derby’s rich industrial history, celebrating the makers of the past; and will be designed to empower makers of the future through inspirational environments for learning programmes and activities.
The 2016 ‘Project Lab’ phase builds on the most recent stage, which saw a community rebuilding programme ‘Re:Make the Museum’ engage local people in helping develop, design and build new displays, furniture and fittings for the ground floor ‘prototype’ Museum of Making between 2013-14.
