Bring to life in tonal studies, expressing yourself through variations in markings and shading and familiarizing yourself with drawing steps - it's all in the shadows. If the shadows are the correct size and shape, in proportion and correctly placed the illusion will be convincing. Suitable for beginners wishing to create powerful atmospheric drawings with charcoal, who will be supported in the necessary skills, and also for experienced artists.
Charcoal drawings can be loose or they can be rendered to a high degree of realism. You will discover how harcoal drawing is actually closely related to painting. The characteristics of charcoal enable it to be easily spread, blended, and erased and is sensitive to the pressure applied. Practise and experimentation will be encouraged and is the key to reaching your true potential. During the course you will focus on creating the shapes and values of the shadows, highlights, and mid tones and deepen your skill at creating a full range of accurately observed value in your drawing.
Charcoal can be applied to just about any surface that will accept the mark. The most common surfaces or papers have a course tooth, or texture however smooth surfaces are also acceptable and include newsprint.
